Athens Aboard: Studying Modern Supply Chain in an Ancient City!

Hi everyone! My name is Toni Wells, and I am a first-year Industrial Engineer at the University of Pittsburgh. Originally, I am from Baltimore, Maryland but in pursuit of a wider range of engineering opportunities, I found myself at Pitt! Within the Swanson School of Engineering, I’m an Engineering Ambassador along with being a part of our National Society of Black Engineers. Beyond the classroom, you will likely find me engaged with Pitt’s Student Government board advocating for student support, clicking away with my camera, chatting it up with friends, or listening to music as I’m always on the look out for new tunes!

As an Industrial Engineer, I wanted to choose a Plus 3 location that would encapsulate the logistics and processes that go into engineering in a different country. Greece being a gateway for imports and exports across the Mediterranean Sea made them an ideal place that I have sought out to see. Through this program, I look forward to learning how the historical and religious aspects of Athens have shaped the way they manage and maintain their supply chain operations. I aspire to gain a strong understanding of Greek customs and come to learn how to converse and interact with international companies.

In regards to the future, I foresee this program helping me to achieve my goal of understanding how different socioeconomic factors can impact the application of engineering across the world. There is no doubt that every culture integrates their culture and customs into how they build and create. Which is why, Plus 3 will allow me to work towards comprehending the duality and versatility of engineering that I know is out there. As an aspiring professional engineer, obtaining a diverse background in the various foundations of supply chain present around the world, will prepare me for facing variety within the field with an open mind for innovation. All in all, I look forward to exploring where my engineering degree can and will take me, and for my first stop, I’ll be going to Greece!
