Next Stop: The Netherlands

Hello, I’m Dylan Troup and I’m a first-year environmental engineering student here at the University of Pittsburgh, and I’m originally from Morristown, New Jersey! I’m studying environmental engineering and plan to pursue a sustainability certificate. Here at Pitt, I’m part of the Frederick Honors College and a member of Epsilon Eta Delta, an environmental honors fraternity where I’ll hold a committee position as sustainability co-chair next semester.

Outside of academics, some of my hobbies include playing viola, being outside in nature, gardening, and taking photos. Music has been an important part of my life since I was part of the orchestra throughout high school and hope to join the orchestra at Pitt next year! I’m also always listening to music and some of my favorite artists are Cocteau Twins, Starflyer 59, and more recently Ethel Cain.

This summer, I’ll be traveling to the Netherlands as part of Pitt’s Plus3 program, which focuses on renewable energy and sustainability. I’m very passionate about sustainability and am excited to learn more about real-world applications of this through the company visits. In the future, I plan to work on pollution control or wastewater management, which I’ve become more interested in after learning about the wastewater issues in Pittsburgh. Considering the Netherlands has a highly advanced water management system, I plan to use what I learn there in my future career. Aside from the career aspects of this trip, I’m very excited to experience the way that the Netherlands is different from the United States, such as the more widespread public transportation system, more sustainable infrastructure, and waste management systems. Overall, I can’t wait to explore what the Netherlands has to offer and learn more about the culture!
