Bilbao Day 5: The Hike

Today continued our focus on healthcare and rehabilitation while also giving us the chance to explore more of the area around Bilbao.

We started the day with another hospital visit, where we got to see different rehabilitation devices that are currently available on the market. One of the most interesting was the exoskeleton systems used to help patients walk. The devices could support movement at different speeds and even help patients go up ramps and stairs. It was interesting to see how much technology is involved in rehabilitation and how these systems are designed to help patients regain independence. We also saw devices that tested reaction speed, coordination, and memorization, showing how rehabilitation can focus on both physical and cognitive recovery. We all went and had 1v1s on who had faster reaction times.

After lunch, we traveled to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. The hike was definitely tiring with all the stairs and elevation, but the view at the end made it worth it. The coastline and ocean scenery were incredible, and we were very lucky that the weather ended up being one of the nicest days we’ve had so far. Being able to see the cliffs and water in person made the whole hike feel rewarding. After the hike, we went to the beach and had ice cream.

Overall, the day was a good balance between learning about rehabilitation technology and getting to experience more of the natural scenery around Bilbao.
