Based solely on our pre-departure meetings, it’s clear Costa Rica has a substantial dedication to sustainability. The country seems very focused on their footprint and how manmade things affect their land and their people. While they may be small, managing to get an entire country to work with the environment in mind is very impressive. I imagine it was not an easy feat and it comes with its challenges. With only cursory research, I found some information on Costa Rica’s initiatives in things like waste management and conservation. They banned single use plastics in protected wilderness areas and pay their landowners for conservation. Unfortunately, my initial search did not mention bananas, coffee, or tropical agriculture. I’m excited to learn more about Costa Rica’s sustainability practices. With policies so different from the US, it’s interesting to see how these companies work. Additionally, I’m excited for our planned cultural activities and to leave the US for the first time.
