Today I think I had my favorite experience of the trip so far. We traveled about an hour and a half to Sounion where Poseidon’s Temple is located. Similar to the Parthenon, it is about 2500 years old. Along the way the landscapes became more and more rugged and wild and I really enjoyed watching this change while our guide Dimitris gave us more background on the places we were passing by. When we finally got near the temple, we took a stop at a nearby viewing point. The morning was a bit overcast, but the view at a distance with the sun’s rays cutting through the clouds was beautiful to see and I think it actually added to it. The temple itself was very interesting and it was nice to see the difference in progression of the erosion compared to things like the Parthenon, as it is on a peninsula and in a position where it can be damaged by the seawater. They also were not in the process of renovation on the temple which gave us a much clearer view. The whole peninsula itself is also a very serene area which I enjoyed. Maybe it is recency bias but this is definitely my favorite visit so far!
