Day 5
Hey guys, I can’t believe it’s already the fifth day in Seoul. Today was definitely a long one, so sit tight and enjoy my blog.
I started my day pretty early so I could get ready and head to breakfast in time to take pictures for the SSOE Instagram takeover. If you haven’t seen it yet, go look at it. Breakfast was amazing because they had kimchi fried rice again, which automatically made the morning better.
We then boarded our coach bus for the day, and our first stop was the Korean Demilitarized Zone. One thing I learned is that farmers in the DMZ can’t use fertilizer for their crops, so the food from there tastes different compared to other places in Korea. Before going into the actual DMZ area, we walked around, got food, and prepared for the bus ride in.
Once inside, we had a couple of different stops: the tunnels, the observatory, and the unification center. At the tunnels, we actually got the chance to walk down into one of the tunnels that North Korea had built toward South Korea before it was discovered. We had to wear helmets because the tunnels were so small, and I definitely hit my head at least twice. The walk down honestly wasn’t bad, but walking back up was ROUGH.
After that, we visited the observatory, where we could actually look into North Korea through the binoculars and see the bordering city and farm workers. But honestly, my personal highlight was seeing Ken Jennings from Jeopardy! there. He was sitting like two rows directly in front of me. Out of all the random places to run into a famous person, the DMZ was definitely not on my bingo card.
From there, we went to the unification center to get souvenirs, and I bought a bunch of cute magnets for my family.
Funny enough, even after all of that, our day still wasn’t over because we also went to a Korean baseball game. The game was KT Wiz vs. Kiwoom Heroes. I didn’t believe Chris at first when he said the biggest population of ticket buyers were young women, but once I got there… yeah, he was definitely right.
Even though I usually hate baseball, this game was actually SO much fun. If you’re chronically online like me, you’ve probably seen the TikTok-famous Korean cheerleaders before, and seeing them in person absolutely lived up to the hype. We learned so many chants and dances throughout the game. Since we were sitting on the KT side, I fully committed to supporting KT, and thankfully they won. I also got churros shaped like baseballs, which honestly made the experience even better. There genuinely wasn’t a dull moment the entire game.
After the game, we took the bus back to the hotel and had to pack all our stuff for tomorrow, which is apparently going to be another really interesting day. So stay tuned!
