2 Days Into Morocco

AI Paragraph: Rabat, the capital of Morocco, offers a lifestyle that blends old-world charm with modern convenience. The medina and UNESCO-listed historic sites like the Kasbah of the Udayas sit alongside contemporary government buildings and cafes, reflecting the city’s dual identity as both a cultural hub and administrative center. The pace of life is noticeably calmer than Casablanca — residents enjoy the Atlantic coastline, bustling souks, and a vibrant food scene rooted in Moroccan tradition. The city has a strong academic and diplomatic presence, giving it a cosmopolitan feel while remaining deeply connected to its Amazigh and Arab heritage.

After meeting my host family for the first time today, I got to learn firsthand what life in Rabat looks like for lifelong citizens. I was lucky enough to be paired with a host family who has a 19-year-old son, Adam, who has been extremely welcoming, helping me learn so much in only one day. Even though Adam doesn’t know much English, and I know about 5 Arabic words total, he knew just enough so that we were still able to have conversations as he showed me around the city and beaches, pointing out places I should check out along with his favorites. This three-hour excursion taught me just how much Moroccan’s love football for one thing, as Adam and all his friends spend a large portion of their day playing football on the beach and it is his favorite past time. On top of this, I knew next to nothing about Islamic religion before meeting my family, but Adam explained some of the beliefs and rules they follow.

Eating with my family was also a great experience, watching and learning the proper way to have their meals was my favorite part of dinner, and my host mother made some amazing croissants afterward as well.

As I mentioned, football is very important here and two of the best teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona squared off tonight, and getting to watch that game with the family in the common area and see how passionate they were about the game was a lot of fun. Opportunities like these that help me to see more of my host family’s personality are something I look forward to getting more of the next few days as I learn more about life in Rabat.
