Today we took a day trip to the gorgeous coastal town of Nafplio in Argolis, Peloponnese. On the trip there, our tour guide Dimitris pointed out landmarks, towns, and anything else interesting in the stunning Greek countryside. Once we arrived, we were greeted by a small but beautiful town, filled with shops, restaurants, and people. Dimitris then guided us around the town for about an hour, filling us in on details of the former capital of Greece, and then we were able to explore on our own. After that, we went to Epidavros, an ancient Greek theatre where Dimitris grew up going, and is still in use today. This was very interesting because the theatre was built with perfect acoustics, and if you stand in a certain place, the echoes will carry sound throughout the entire audience. It was really incredible to see such a feat of engineering accomplished so long ago, still standing and functioning today. I also really enjoyed the nature part of this stop; all of the greenery was really beautiful.
On the bus back to Athens, Dimitris gave us a wonderful recap of everything that we had seen with him on the trip, since Epidavros was our last visit with him. He then advised us to continue learning about the world around us, including history, language, and architecture, so that we can become even better in our chosen field in the future. He mentioned that him knowing bits about science helps him understand his career more, despite it not being directly related. This really stuck with me as someone who is very interested in travelling and learning more about different cultures. Dimitris is extremely knowledgeable about the world, can speak several languages, and has visited over 100 countries, and I hope to be able to do even a fraction of that in my life. In the future, I want to travel more and experience the world from other people’s perspectives while also being able to apply that to my life and career to become the best version of myself.
