Day 8: Flowers and Flea Market!

Today was very nice because we got to start our day a little later than usual and our first stop was for a famous dessert here in Bilbao, churros and chocolate! I’m not a chocolate girl so I just tried the churros and got a smoothie, but they were absolutely delicious! It was great to just spend time with friends over some yummy sweets. Then, we took a metro over to Casco Viejo, where they have a weekly flea and flower market along the river on Sundays. It was so cute to walk around, and it was beautiful weather to start the day! A bunch of the girls all got rings from the flea market, which was fun to all get a little souvenir to remember our trip. The flowers were all so vibrant and beautiful, and I loved seeing so many people at the market buying flowers for others.

After the market, we went to the funicular, which is a transit service that took us up the mountain to this beautiful outlook onto the city of Bilbao. It was absolutely stunning, and I loved getting to see all of the architecture and the mountains of the Basque countryside from afar. When we were at the top, Dr. Abramowitch led our group through a mid-trip check in meeting where we got to reflect on everything we have done on the trip so far and how it has impacted us. Even from just one week, I realized how much I have already learned from this trip and have acquired information that I will take with me throughout my entire nursing career and life in general. Towards the end of the meeting, it started to get very cold out before an insane storm came through and it started pouring rain, so we made our way down the mountain. To avoid walking back to the hotel in pouring rain, a group of us decided to get pintxos and gelato, and after we got those the rain was done and we enjoyed a sunny walk home!

After a busy morning we were all pretty tired, so we took some time to relax and take a much needed nap, before all going to a restaurant called Alboroto to celebrate Eloise’s birthday! I got pasta which was pretty good, and it was fun to spend the night in all of my friend’s company! After dinner, we all headed back to the hotel to rest up for the busy week ahead. Overall, it was a great day and I am super excited to see what our second week holds!
