May 11 – Lots of Fruit

We got to start our day with a walking tour of the city of Heredia, and it was cool doing an Amazing Race style scavenger hunt in the central market (we even got some news features). It was super cool experiencing a local market and seeing how business is done there, and I think it mostly reinforced my idea of how Tico’s live. Everyone was super friendly and helpful, and some of the vendors definitely took their time, so I definitely think it confirmed my impressions of Tico’s. After a quick ice cream break we got to go to a Costa Rican tapas experience at a soda. We got to try some super cool fruits, some of which were delicious and some were quite interesting, as well as a few other traditional local dishes.

One thing that I did not expect about my homestay so far is that there is no main trash can in the house. There is a small one in the bathroom, but our host family takes the rest of the trash and puts them into plastic bags. Obviously it is nothing crazy, but it defintely took me by surprise as I’ve never thrown out the trash that way. Our host family also has a dog (lucky us), and she basically always stays outside in the backyard which is a little strange to me. I’m grateful that my host family has been awesome and have definitely made me feel super comfortable with such a new living situation.
