Welcome back, readers! I have exciting news as we have finally landed in Quito and completed our first day in the city. This was by far the best travel day I’ve ever had. We woke up bright and early and immediately headed out into town. Our first stop was at church for a morning mass and a tour of the convent. Walking around, we saw the friars and art dating back to the 1500s. Walking in felt like taking a time machine back to the time of the Spanish conquest. The best part of ending up in the bell tower is looking out upon the city. After that, we had time to explore, stopping for lunch with the locals and trying every empanada flavor we could find, but I especially enjoyed the beef and plantains combo.
With our stomachs full, we set out on a hike up to the Statue of the Virgin Mary overlooking the city. After 900 stairs climbed, yes 900 and a few breaks we made it to the top and took in a breathtaking few of Quito, the sourrounding mountain ramges and a few volcanos as well. We made the wise decision and Ubered down the hill to the national basilica of the country, for a self-guided tour of the most beautiful stained glass. After a climb up a questionable spiral staircase, we made it to the top of the church, which had my favorite views of the day. Walking back to the hotel, we made a quick detour, which turned out to be the coolest chocolate store in town. The owner gave us all his best samples, and I tried flavors i didnt even know existed like, like cinnamon flower and lulo fruit. After a great dinner, it was time to hang out with the crew and recap the day. I cant belivce its ony day one and im already in love woth the country. I’m excited to see what comes next. Until next time, travelers.
