A Day at the Port

Today, we visited the Piraeus Port, which is the main gateway port connecting to the entirety of Greece. I enjoyed being able to observe the port by bus because I have never visited a port like this one. I have visited various ports in the past to board cruise ships, but I have never experienced seeing or visiting a port that functions as a shipping terminal. We were able to see the three different piers at the port and where the vessels actually operated. While we were touring by bus, we could also see containers actively being placed onto the vessels. During our port visit, we met with the company, Piraeus Container Terminal, which operates out of the Piraeus Port. The company combines Greek and Chinese efforts and has been offering management services since 2016. I thought it was interesting to see how this growing terminal service is progressively expanding to continue to strengthen relations between Greece and China. We learned that their combined efforts will help them to reach sustainability goals, as they plan to electrify their entire fleet of trucks by 2030, but will likely be achieved sooner. I have been intrigued by our maritime company visits in Athens and the way they connect global trade with engineering and continued innovation.
