Part 1: Religion
Through my observations, religion is the driving force of Morocco. We learned today that Morocco is a Sunni Muslim culture. Laws are shaped by religion, which is why Morocco has the customs it has. Women’s rights and common ideas are shaped by ideas of religion. Throughout the day, I hear calls to prayer. We learned today that Allah akbar means Allah is greater. Specifically, “greater” is used to emphasize how Sunni Muslim is the best religion. In particular, the king is guided by religion more than anything. The King will go and pray with the citizens. I found this very interesting.
Part 2: Politics
We learned that politics is a combination of a monarchy (king) with a modernized Parliament. Politics have led to shifts away from the traditional laws of Morocco. We learned that in 2003, terrorist attacks led to changes in Moroccan Law. Woman were treated as minors and they needed a male guardian to make all their decisions. It is no longer like this. From what I have seen, Morocco looks modernized. I have seen malls, McDonald’s, and more. I have seen woman walking around with men holding hands.
Part 3: Woman
I have not observed women being harassed. However, I have noticed that my host mom is pretty much always at home. She always cooks me meals and wears traditional outfits. We learned that women were considered minors until 2003, which meant they needed a man’s permission for things outside of the house.
Part 4: What has affected me the Most
I believe the role of women has affected me the most. My host mom is so nice, and she always cooks for me. She cleans everything. At home, I sometimes make my own food or buy my own. I have to clean as well. My mom works and is not always home. It is nice to always see a friendly face at home.
