Day 11: Tekniker and Hiking

Today was our 11th day in Bilbao! We started off the day with our usual morning breakfast before boarding the bus to head to Tekniker, an engineering company. Once we arrived, we met the head of the health sector at the company. He gave us a brief overview of the way the company is structured before a member from the human resources department talked to us about ways to get involved with the company as a student. We then took a tour of the facility. We visited many different labs that each had a certain purpose, the main working space, and the different amenities that they offer their employees. They have a climbing wall, a gym, and a relax station which is consistent with the theme of a healthy work life balance that we have seen throughout our trip.

After our visit, we boarded the bus to head our hike in the Oma forest. We met our amazing tour guide and started our trek up the mountain. Once we reached the top, we sat and ate our sandwiches before heading further into the forest to see the painted trees. We followed the map that directed us to look at the painted trees. There were these markers on the ground that when you stood on them and looked at the trees, they created a picture. After we made it back down, we boarded the bus again to go to Gernica for a walking tour. We walked around and visited a replica of the Gernica painting by Picasso, saw the parliament building, and went into a bomb shelter to learn about the bombing that occurred there before WWII. Although today was busy and tiring, I still had such a great time with all my peers!
