The 2 companies that we visited yesterday had 2 very different business models and how they operate. Kendryl has a multinational corporation business model, while Dos Pinos is more of a cooperative owned by Costa Rican farmers. Kendryl focuses on tech consulting and a more global business. It has a bunch of branches in different countries, which help their global business. This would help Costa Rica because it would bring in foreign investment. The main headquarters is in New York, which would affect most of the decision-making. This causes more of an Americanized approach rather than a Costa Rican approach, which would benefit Costa Rica.
Dos Pinos is owned by local Costa Rican farmers, who take on a more Costa Rican centralized approach. This creates a stronger connection between the Costa Rican farmers and the customers that they are selling it to. As our instructors said, everyone is working together to “pitch in” equipment, so this would have a very positive effect on small farmers and larger farmers because it will benefit everyone.
In my opinion, the model that would create the most lasting impact on Costa Rica would definitely be the Dos Pinos model. It would help with all the local farmers, who have a huge impact on Costa Rica’s economy, and since it would follow the Costa Rican way, it would draw in more customers, create more of a connection between the products, and have a deep sense of cultural tradition.
