Today we got to go to Uruguay by boat! It was such an unexpected amazing experience. In the morning I regretted not bringing a jacket as it was FREEZING. The lady gave us a very nice walking tour and described the impact of the nature we walked around. Many of the buildings were beautiful and had bright colors like pinks, blues and whites. Their church back in the day was built by a military engineer and lacked the structural support on the roof. Over time the roof began to crack so they added metal bars to increase support. A couple of centuries later the roof began to crack again due to the change of the center of gravity.
At lunch we got to have a traditional Uruguay dessert called Chaja. It is layers of sponge cake with fresh peaches, dulce de leche, and meringue. It was very delicious and I loved the freshness of the peaches. After lunch we got to explore the town on our own. There were so many amazing small businesses and I was able to find a great gift for my mom. While walking around Sophia and I found a cheese tasting business and enjoyed many traditional cheeses from South America. There was also a sweet pepper sauce that enhanced the cheese’s taste. The cheese of colonial Uruguay is called colonial and it is a soft cheese similar to provolone. I would have to say that was the best part of my day and our waiter was so nice! Another amazing part about Colonia, Uruguay was their community of dogs. The dogs protect the tourists and are a family who run around and play all day. When cars are going to fast through their town they bark at them and chase the car. The dogs also guided us on our tour and protected us during the walk. Overall it was a perfect day in Uruguay and I loved every second of it!
Special note to Jason, I really like your hats and interesting stories about your travels! Jason is super helpful when needing translations or understanding of the culture.
