What is Peronism? (Day 7)

Juan Perón played an important role in developing Argentina’s healthcare system, especially through unions and public healthcare programs. During his presidency, Perón helped the working class and expanded social welfare. He believed healthcare should be available to everyone, not just the wealthy. One of his biggest contributions was strengthening labor unions. Under Perón, unions gained more power and created healthcare organizations called Obras Sociales. These union run health plans were funded through worker and employer contributions and provided medical care, hospitals, medications, and other services for workers and their families. This allowed many middle and working class people to access healthcare that they may not have been able to afford. Even today, union healthcare remains a major part of Argentina’s healthcare system. Perón also expanded the public healthcare system by investing in hospitals, clinics, and public health programs. His government promoted preventive care, vaccinations, and healthcare access for poorer communities. Eva Perón, who we learned about at a Museum,  also supported healthcare and social welfare through the Eva Perón Foundation, which helped fund hospitals and assistance programs for low income families. Although Argentina’s healthcare system still faces funding and inequality challenges today, many parts of the current system were influenced by Perón. His leadership helped create a healthcare structure that combined union based coverage with public healthcare services, while also promoting the idea that healthcare should be a social right available to everyone.
