On this trip, we have learned so much about sustainability, including the good and bad. Sustainability is using land in a way that protects wildlife and keeps the planet healthy while balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social wellbeing. Some examples of this would be solar energy, wind energy, protecting rainforests, national parks, etc.
Sustainability has many different pros. To start off, it reduces pollution in everything, like air and water. Another big thing that sustainability helps with is slowing climate change. As said in our tour of LIFE (Low Impact For Earth), they keep 50% of their land they own as protected forests and wildlife. They believe this helps keep the air cooler by shading multiple parts, and they also keep wildlife alive by doing this because they aren’t cutting down trees and ruining their homes.
Another pro to sustainability is the low amount of waste produced. At LIFE, their waste gets turned into fertilizer for their soil. That way, they’re saving money and producing less waste. They also provide great working conditions for their workers, which produces more sustainability for the workers. If they have land going unused in the 50% that they do plant in, they offer it to the workers. If they want to plant crops there, all they have to do is plant and keep the crops healthy, and then when they’re fully grown, they can take the food home to their families. This encourages sustainability for people as well, which can sometimes be forgotten.
With that being said, sustainability can be more expensive to start up. Solar panels and ecofriendly materials are definitely expensive to buy, which can make it difficult for companies to start up with these kinds of things. It can also be difficult for normal people, because of prices of electric cars and higher prices for more sustainable products.
Overall, sustainability is great for the economy, but it can be very difficult to start up and keep up with it. Sustainability protects the life of people, animals, and economic growth for the future, and in my opinion can be very useful for the economy.
