I nether want to leave!

On our last day in the Netherlands, we visited the national seat of government, the Hague. This city has served as the administrative center since the 13th century, containing the Prime minister’s office, the Supreme court, and the King’s working palace. The Hague was chosen to be the political city of the Netherlands because of its neutrality and political insignificance in the 1500s. Cities like Amsterdam would’ve gained too much policital power if it was chosen, so the Dutch republic agreed the Hague would be best.

As we arrived, our tour guide gave us more information about Dutch politics. The Netherlands is considered a parliamentary constitutional monarchy where the monarch holds no political power and is rather a symbol of national unity. This figure will carry out ceremonial duties, but the prime minister and cabinet members hold the executive power. When looking into how these people are voted in, it differs from the United States. For instance, the Netherlands currently has 15 political parties that are elected nationwide. The percentage of votes supporting the political party will directly relate to their representation in the House. The idea of this system is there will be less division between parties as each option gets to voice their opinions.

After our tour, we got to explore the city! We first visited the Peace Palace, an international law administrative building that strives to bring Peace through the world. This houses the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the United Nation International Court of Justice, and The Hague Academy of International Law. It was very cool to learn the building’s history as they providing a free audio tour inside the visitor center! After this visit, we got desserts like stroopwafel and gelato while exploring the streets, parks, and shops of the city.

To end our long trip, we had a farewell dinner to spend time in the Netherlands together before our flight back. I have truly enjoyed this experience so much and will forever remember the joyful memories we created. Everything we learned from innovation to Netherlands culture was truly impactful, and I believe I’ll take it with me throughout the future. I am so thankful for this opportunity and am excited to start my sustainability certificate which was inspired by this class!
