Day 14 Blog — Exploring Austria

Well, that’s a wrap! Our time in Germany has come to a close, and oddly enough, we chose to spend the day in an entirely different country, Austria. Almost all of our travel group made our way to Salzburg, waking up early and hopping on a train to get to Munich’s main station. There, we had a connecting train which took us all the way to Salzburg, all without a hiccup.

Once we touched down in Salzburg, the world was our oyster. We made our way through Mirabell Palace, which was gorgeous. After everyone had their chance for a photo-op, we made our way into central Salzburg, where we just walked around for a while. However, of course, we had to stop for one final coffee on the way, and some quick and easy sandwiches, both of which were delicious.

Half of our group had decided to go on a hike where The Sound of Music was filmed, which looked breathtaking, but after a long week of walking, walking, and even more walking, I chose to slow it down and hang out in Salzburg with everyone else.

So after we said our goodbyes to those brave enough to make the hike, we wandered for quite some time. Personally, I had been slacking on my souvenir shopping, so I took the opportunity to grab some keepsakes for my mom, dad, and sister.

As we weaved through the long and windy streets of Salzburg, we found ourselves at the foot of the fortress, Hohensalzburg. Rather than hiking up the mountain, we all got aboard a tram to take us to the top, which was reminiscent of the Duquesne incline, but a lot sturdier.

Once we got on top of this fortress, all of us were simply stunned at the beauty of the view. We all took our time to take plenty of pictures, walked around the fortress itself, and then sat down to share some German desserts. The desserts I shared were apple strudel, tiramisu, and a chocolate cake, all of which were delicious.

After we took our break from walking, we got back up, headed back down the way we came, and shopped a little more before we left. We stumbled upon a gift shop which had replica swords from popular media like The Lord of the Rings and The Legend of Zelda; thankfully, I couldn’t impulse purchase any of these as I don’t know how I would’ve gotten them home (even though they were super cool).

After it was all said and done, we hopped back on the train and headed to the hotel, where sadly, I would have to pack up all my clothes and get ready for the long travel day we had ahead of us.
