The Good Samaritan

Today we got the chance to visit the Good Samaritan Hospice. This was a very moving experience hearing Dr. Matias Najun explain the palliative care process and the emotions around it. The way the Good Samaritan dealt with the idea of death was much different than I had ever thought before and it was very moving to think of celebrating a life instead of mourning one. Dr. Najun explained that the goal of the hospice was to make the patient’s last days as enjoyable as any other ones. It was very moving to hear stories and see the happiness of patients there. Even though their lives may have been coming to an end, they showed happiness and positivity when we got the chance to interact with them. It was amazing to see that the Good Samaritan was able to run the hospice off of strictly donations and volunteers. Like the story of the Good Samaritan the hospice takes in patients who were previously suffering and could not afford palliative care. The hospice, free of charge takes in the poor, suffering people of Pillar and gives them a home. For some of the patients this is the closest thing to a home that they have ever had. Dr. Najun shared several moving stories with us that made myself emotional but also more comfortable talking about the matter of death. The story about Ezekiel, a patient they had taken in from a public hospital was extremely moving in particular. Ezekiel was abandoned by his family and left suffering in a hospital with cancer. As soon as Ezekiel was taken in to Good Samaritan he began to thrive and actually help around the hospice with other patients and the volunteers. More importantly Ezekiel was happy and no longer in pain. Ezekiel was also able to reconnect with his family in his final days and also reconcile with the lord after a troubled past. Ezekiel’s favorite singer also came to visit him all the way from Miami which was incredible to see on video as the two connected and sang together. Ezekiel was at peace before he passed away and it was extremely moving to see that Good Samaritan was able to let him live his best days there. Good Samaritan Hospice is a very special place and the Good Samaritan who is present there gives patients a chance to enjoy their final days in an environment to their liking created by a beautiful group of volunteers who are the real good Samaritans.
