Samsung: More Than Just A Phone Producer

This morning was a brutal awaking to the alarm clock at 6am. I grabbed a quick breakfast because there was only a 20-minute window due to our long ride to Samsung Biologics. The ride there wasn’t too bad considering it was an hour and a half away. We passed a few satellite cities and it was so eye opening seeing so many huge apartment buildings that looked identical. I haven’t seen a single house the entire trip and to me, that is crazy. The factories for Samsung were massive and almost incomprehensible. We toured the factories where they produced their biological pharmaceuticals and it was so interesting. They also had an interactive VR headset we could try that was a virtual tour of their 3 factories. Afterwards, we drove back to the hotel to relax a little before our next visit. We then headed to city hall and got a tour of the new and old tour and it was so cool. A thing that has been noticeable while in Seoul is that almost every building is built with a meaning behind it and they embody some part of culture or history. The old city hall was built while Korea was under Japanese rule and the new city hall stands behind it. The new building’s outside is built from glass and vinyl and it has such a unique look. After our tour, we headed to the Seoul Global Startup center. This was super intriguing and we learned about some of the new startups that were in the making. The executive of the startup explained to us how important foreign startups are and how the government supports a lot of the startups. We got to meet some of the CEO’s who explained why they created what they did. One of the most notable inventions was a type of trash can that a person scans before they throw out their trash and it collects data on what consumers buy and where. Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel and Dr. Yun took a few of us out to some Korean fried chicken and it was so good. Our group then headed to Hungdae and got to witness the nightlife of Koreans our age. Korea has been such an insightful view into a new culture and an eye-opening experience so far.
