Day 3: ports and castles

The start of day three made me think about how I need to get a espresso machine at home, because I am being spoiled each morning. Anyways, day three started early with the same breakfast as every morning. Then we boarded the bus for an hour and a half ride to Limassol, where all the action would take place.

As we neared the mediterranean, we arrived at out first company visit. The first company we talked to was Dubai Ports World, where we learned both about the operations of the biggest port in Cyprus and some life advice. Again I found it interesting that such a large company only had a small staff of 74. Where 40%-50% of the team were made up of engineers and the remaining percent where “white collar” employees. The company is continuing to expand and grow throughout their 25 year plan. DPW’s speaker was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He studied in Texas for some time and gave us inspiring last words before we got back on the bus to tour the different terminals.

Then we took a short bus ride to the other side of the port, where we talked with Eurogate. Here, I learned that Eurogate exports/imports only cargo that can be stored in containers along with the machinery they use to move, transport, stack, and deliver the containers. The two company’s truly showed the hospitality that I have been told Cypriots possess, from making us feel welcome to providing us with baked goods and coffee after the presentation. After the presentation, we got to see the movement of a container up close along with the huge machinery.

We then took a bus to Old Port for the remainder of our time in Limassol. The view of the bright blue water was breathtaking as we were walking to our restaurant for lunch. After our lunch of a charcuterie board of American food, we visited the Limassol Castle. Art was displayed all throughout the castle with deep history. The access to the roof of the castle displayed all of Limassol and a beautiful mural.

Touring the castle lead to free time to explore the Marina and Old City area. We walked through a hidden alley of restaurants to a mosque, then headed to the pier to admire the water. Admiring lead to people jumping in to then walking more to dry off to climbing on rocks to end with sea watching. Limassol has been my favorite city we have visited in Cyprus so far and made me even more excited for the days to come!
