Silver and Lace

Today was our first company visit where we headed over to the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI). There we learned about how they are a research group that specializes in Marine Tech, Marine Sciences, and also Marine Social Sciences. The speakers from CMMI showed us examples of the technology that they have been developing and how they plan to help and provide services to other companies. One piece of technology that stuck out to me was a software they had developed that allows a user to highlight a certain portion of the Cypriot coast and in return would show the user which areas are best suited for windsurfing or swimming based on wind speeds. Technology like this is fascinating to me as it seems so complex. We also learned about how the Internet of Things (IoT) allows for more complex projects to be proposed and worked on.

After we ate lunch at the Finikoudes promenade, we then moved over to the St. Lazarus Church. The inside of the church was incredible. The architecture was incredible along with the most magnificently built chandeliers. Also, they had idols, which were pictures of people significant to the church, lining the walls.

Later in the day, we took a bus to Lefkara Village. Lefkara Village is known for its specialization in silver work along with the creation of lace. Lefkara is a very colorful village with an impressive view over the valley below. During our walk through the village, we had a chance to see a silver worker handmaking a decoration. We also got to try Cyprus Delight, a candy that was homemade by the woman offering it to us. My favorite part of this experience happened during our free time. I ended up walking into a shop where I saw meet a Cypriot man. I asked him where the items that he made were and he showed me happily. He gave me a discounted price on a necklace as he could tell I was very intrigued. I then ended up buying the necklace and he even adjusted it for me so that it would fit better. After this we got a picture together. Overall, Lefkara Village has been my favorite experience here so far as my experiences with the locals there were always so positive.
