We had an exciting day today! We started our day with a short tour of the Docklands area. This area was full of businesses, and very pretty. During this tour, we were able to learn more about the history of Ireland, the Docklands, and the area’s purpose. After this, we went to a site visit at Google, where we got to meet a few staff members and see parts of their office.
During the Docklands tour, we got to learn a lot of information about the history of Ireland. This has been a theme throughout the past few days as we have been on tours and other visits. There is a lot that has changed, but still resemblances of the old that once stood. Physically throughout Dublin, I have seen many references to their past history in museums, castles and cathedrals, statutes, and monuments. Even restaurants have names that symbolize old historical figures and events. Culturally, their history is highly ingrained within. Their history has shaped them to be the culture that they are today. An example of this is through their sports. As we saw on the stadium tour yesterday, their old culture is greatly important to them and their pride for their country. Finally, we saw within the people that the history of Dublin has shaped them. As our tour guide spoke about his life today, he spoke about how he had two sides to him: the European, educated side, and the strong Irish, old history side. Our tour guide spoke about how the history of Ireland and its old culture has shaped him. Overall, the old Ireland and its culture has greatly influenced the new.
Additionally, I got to learn a lot about Google’s culture and the company as a whole today. After visiting, I believe that I would like to work for Google. I believe I would enjoy working for Google because I would appreciate the individuality, work-life balance, and flexibility that the company provides. The staff spoke a lot about the strong work-life balance and the flexibility that the job provides them by working at home and providing different incentives around the office space. They also spoke about being able to choose what they would be able to work on and the ability to pursue other projects 20% of the time.
Overall, I was able to reflect greatly on the importance of Ireland’s history and learned much from the site visit at Google.
