Day 8: Dachau

Today we were up early to make a visit to Dachau, a concentration camp that was used before and during World War II. It was also the first concentration camp in Germany and was used to model all other concentration camps to follow in Germany and Europe.

When fist arriving, we met up with our tour guide and he gave us some basic information about the camp and what we will be taking a look at before we went in. As soon as we entered through the gates into Dachau, everything hit me. It was a feeling that I have never really felt before, it was unbelievably sad and awakening.

We walked through the gate and immediately saw a huge open pace where prisoners were forced to do attendance twice a day. We then looked at their living spaces which were initially built to house around 50 people but ended up being used for hundreds of people in the same place. Most twin beds would sleep about 3 people.

After that, we walked around a bit more and were told about different aspects of the camp and how the Nazi’s used it during the war. To be honest, it was very sad things that I don’t necessarily want to go into detail about.

At the end of our tour, we went into the museum and walked around for about 20 minutes to explore and see some extra information about the camp. Even though Dachau was a super tough experience to go through, it isdefinitely something that everyone should try and do in their lifetime. Stories and movies don’t do nearly enough to explain the feeling that glooms over a place like that. It is also super important to learn about this history so it never repeats again.

Once getting back to the hotel after our time at Dachau, I worked on my project with my group for a little bit and then went out to get dinner. We went and got Mexican food which was super good. I had three tacos and a grilled avocado on the side, which I have never had before.

Tomorrow we head to Regensburg for a day trip and I’m excited to see another German city!
