Girl Power!

Today was a very unusual day. We started off our day with a Q&A with Professor Martsoff where we all asked questions about the various topics we have learned about thus far. From this, we quickly fell off the tracks of the topic but continued to have educational conversations for the next two hours. On our schedule, there was supposed to be a scheduled union strike planned to happen in opposition to Argentinian President Javier Milei. The people of Argentina, specifically those in unions, are striking against Milei’s recent actions that are countering the power that the unions hold above their union members. Although this strike was very prepared for and anticipated to be one of the largest strikes in the community, it was very underwhelmed. When we went into the city to watch the walk of the mothers that fell victim to the actions of the Argentinian dictatorship in the 1970’s, we were anticipating the community strike to soon follow, but they were nowhere to be seen. Even though this was the case, it was a very educational time that truly represented the solidarity of the Argentine people. Solidarity is the backbone that holds together all communities in this country including those in the working fields, family and friends, etc. It shows how intensely the people are united to better one another and how all the people genuinely care about what is affecting others. They will do anything to help another succeed. After watching the mother’s walk, we traveled back to San Telmo market to do some shopping for the rest of the day. We were able to eat traditional empanadas and steak sandwiches for lunch while supporting the small businesses who create their own original work. Today was a much needed relaxing day to reset from the various activities we usually do. It was nice being able to take a step back and connect with the direct community today instead of focusing solely on our business and nursing educational programs. Although we did not get to witness a strike today, I hope we will be able to witness such an immense part of Argentine culture at some point during our adventure in this beautiful country. ¡Hasta mañana mis amigos!
