Day 9 – Religion and Remnants

Today our day was a different change of pace as instead of going to see a company or taking a class on the language we learned about the religion and some of the history of Vietnam. We started with a class on the history of Buddhism which I found very interesting as I had not really had much exposure to Buddhism before. We learned about its origins and also how it spread to Vietnam and Southeast Asia. After that we went to NgocHoang pagoda which was a very cool experience. We walked around the grounds of the pagoda before going inside and walking around all the rooms. I think that Buddhism is very interesting since it is somewhat different than other religions, but still has some of the same beliefs with a mix of some that make it unique.

After the pagoda we had lunch before heading to the reunification palace. The palace was very cool to see, especially with the architecture and interior design that was conserved. After the palace we went to see the War Remnants Museum. Outside the museum were some of the planes, helicopters, and tanks used during the war and also a replica of the prisons made by the Americans. Inside were different exhibits with photos from the war. This museum was also very interesting as even though we had been taught about the war in history class, it did not go this much in depth. The museum was very well done and presented the information nicely.

Today was a very interesting and insightful day and I can’t believe the trip is starting to come to a close.
