A Latte of Learning to Come

Hi everyone! My name is Danielle Berdik, and I just finished my first year at Pitt! I am majoring in Industrial Engineering and planning to pursue a certificate in supply chain management. Outside of academics, I am active in the service sorority Gamma Sigma Sigma as well as the Society of Women Engineers and the Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian Club, where I serve as the events coordinator. I am thrilled to be traveling to Costa Rica in the next few days!

Costa Rica’s dedication to sustainability is impressive, especially given the country’s small size. Its recent initiatives focus on promoting environmentally friendly agriculture and reducing carbon emissions. After a history of deforestation, Costa Rica is working to restore its forested areas. Key strategies include compensating farmers and landowners for conserving forests and enforcing regulations that prohibit deforestation without government approval, both of which have shown success. Just two months ago, the country exported its first batch of completely deforestation-free grown coffee, marking a milestone in its sustainable agriculture. In an attempt to lower carbon emissions, Costa Rica generates nearly all of its electricity from renewable sources, primarily hydroelectric power. With a national goal of being carbon neutral by 2050, the country is a strong example of environmental action and protection.

I am beyond excited to travel to Costa Rica and explore its rich, fun culture while seeing its diverse wildlife! Additionally, I am excited to have the opportunity to grow my Spanish speaking skills. Since learning the language for the past five years, I have not had many chances to use it outside of the classroom. However, this trip provides the perfect chance to use and enhance my abilities through interactions with my homestay family and locals. Overall, I cannot wait to learn and bring back valuable lessons that span all topics from culture to sustainable business practices!
