Day 5 in Cyprus

This morning we took about an hour bus ride to the southern coast of Cyprus and the city of Limassol on the Mediterranean. Just west of the city is the ancient town of Kourion where we walked through the remains of an ancient settlement of Greek peoples. The house included a western entrance to an outdoor garden, then a cold shower room, a hot shower room, and a sauna, as it acted as a sort of spa. There were also many mosaics, especially some depicting images of their Christian faith. One example was a mosaic of a fish, where the Greek word for fish is an acronym for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, to let those entering know who they worshiped. Additionally there was an amphitheater that the Romans renovated down to only a 180 degree seating set up rather than the original full circle.

Additionally we were able to walk around and experience the city of Limassol and walk through the Limassol Castle. The city is more catered to tourism than Nicosia, and because it is on the coast, there are more restaurants and beachy spots on the sea. We were able to see the boats in the marina as well as some newer constructed tall buildings. Limassol Castle right in the city center was very interesting to walk through as it had gone through many changes of hands (like the island) and was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Partially a church, it was constructed by the Frankish ruler Guy de Lusignan then destroyed by the Venetians to avoid seizure from the Ottomans, and rebuilt late in the 16th century by the Ottomans. The views of the city from the top of the castle and the country side and sea from the top of Kourion were both spectacular as well
