Bilbao – Day 3

Today started off with a wonderful presentation at the Bilbao School of Engineering. Our tour guide from the university presented her and the university’s machine they’ve been working on for over seven years. It is called the Oreka Balance Project and uses force sensors to measure the strength of someone’s balance after they have suffered a stroke. It shows where their center of gravity is and how much pressure they are putting on the grab handles. The only thing they are waiting for now is to go through clinical research and trials before it can be approved by the government for safe and beneficial use.

We then got to hear a wonderful presentation from Dr Borovetz about the history of Pitt and his research on artificial heart pumps. The history part of the presentation was more geared toward the non-Pitt students in attendance, but I still found it interesting. The heart part of the presentation was most interesting though, as an artificial heart pump is essential to many people’s lives and should be studied more such as Dr Borovetz is doing.

We then made it to the famous Bilbao Guggenheim museum (pictured). This was a very interesting experience because the exhibits were very different compared to anything I’ve seen before. My favorite exhibit was one similar to the sphere in Las Vegas or an IMAX theater as it was a room with a 360° view of projectors showing different images that were mind-boggling. The images moves and switched so that it was confusing to the viewer. The Guggenheim was definitely a very cool experience on this trip.
