The Mekong Delta was the day that I was looking forward to the most before the trip started, and it did not disappoint. Right as we got to the market, it started pouring rain. Great start to our day. But, by the time we got onto the bus again and reached the dock, the rain had almost fully stopped. This started to brighten the mood of everyone there and the day just kept getting better and better from there on out. We took a boat ride to the next part of the delta and we got to have some honey tea and hold a small bee farm. There was also trained snake there and almost everyone took a turn to hold the snake which was something I’ve never done ever but of course I had to try it. We then walked over to a little market and store area where we were shown the process of making some foods and we were able to buy things that we wanted. Me and 3 other friends bought matching Vietnam shirts and took some pictures with them which was pretty awesome. We then took a horse ride to the canal area where we could finally paddle along the delta in a little canoe. It was beautiful seeing the leaves drape over the canal path as it gave us some natural shade as well. We got off after the ride and had some lunch. The lunch had many courses, but my favorite was the fish since it seemed so complicated but it was very simple to eat. We were also allowed to play in those bubble balls that people use in the water sometimes, or we could play with the crocodiles or fish in the ponds. That was basically the end of the Mekong Delta today, and we took the boat back to the bus where we did karaoke the whole way back which is always fine.
When looking deeper at some of the people that live and work in the delta, it’s interesting to think about how they can make their money. For example, for the people who paddle tourists down the canals, their only form of income seems to be the tips that they get from the tourists. It seems like such a hard way to live since you never know if you will be getting many people coming to visit on a certain day. Something that also intrigues me about the Mekong Delta region is that it’s almost its own thing that’s separate from Vietnam because they have their own culture and the people tat live there are much different from the ones that live in a big city. Overall, the Mekong Delta was incredibly fun and did not disppoint one bit.
