The day I had been waiting months for had finally arrived: departure day. I had been thinking about the day I would finally get to see the country I had been learning about for months. I was so excited to get going. The day started off a bit rocky with a poor sleep in towers (it was freezing), but I still woke up ready to go. I was glad we didn’t have to get to the airport too early and upon arrival we had plenty of time to spare.
The first flight to Newark was super smooth, just barely an hour and I got off the plane still feeling strong. It was nice for me to be in a familiar space (Newark is the airport I use at home), so I got a small taste of New Jersey before heading out. We were unfortunately flying out of terminal C which is one of the worst for food options and after over 35 minutes of exploring the different gates, we landed on an Asian fusion take out restaurant which was pretty good.
The second flight is where it began to hit. I fell asleep before the plane even took off nor was I awake for takeoff. There were a few difficulties with the GPS so we got off to a late start. After about 40 minutes in the air I woke up to see that an hour of my flight had gone by, and some food was coming around. We started off with cheese and bread sticks which all tasted normal and then we had some options between chicken, beef, or pasta for dinner. I went with the pasta, it came with a small salad which was just a cucumber, a tomato, and some lettuce so not too bad. The pasta itself was ok, the sauce was interesting. I couldn’t tell what kind of sauce it was, but it wasn’t my favorite, it was spiced a bit weird. The bread loaf also taste normal and the birthday cake brownie was the best part because it was sweet and tasted familiar. During and after dinner I watched The Sound of Music to get myself in the zone for our trip as the movie speaks a bit about Austrian. German history and I hope to visit Salzburg on my free day. The rest of my flight was spent drifting in and out of sleep until we were a little less than an hour out from Munich where I had a turkey sandwich and watched the sunrise out the window until we landed after over 8 hours total in flights. We had finally made it! I can’t wait for the two weeks ahead and am most looking forward to visiting Munich. Audi, BMW, and Neuschwanstein Castle.
