Jungle Adventure

Today, May 17th 2018, we took a trip to the Mekong Delta about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City. The weather was hot and very humid, but it was not unbearable because the boat we were on had a roof. We started by traveling across the water and reached the area that provided a lot of fruit. We had many different fruit samples including watermelon, pineapple, mango, and bananas. I thought both the mangos and bananas were much sweeter than back in the United States, so I was surprised at how good those fruits tasted in particular. After exploring through the jungle and seeing the food producing region, we went back on the boat and headed to the honey section of the delta. At this point, we were able to hold a snake around our neck and also hold two beehives, which I elected not to do. The Vietnamese people working there provided unique honey and jelly snacks/products for us to sample and then offered to sell them. The honey tasted very sweet, but I was kind of nervous with all the bees flying around. We also visited the area that had coco beans and we learned how the coco beans were used to produce different kinds of chocolate. After that we went to the coconut section where they described how coconuts are cut and then sent to the markets. Our trip through the Mekong Delta was a mix of transportation and guiding instructors along with farmers and workers who taught us what they do. The trip also consisted of multiple souvenir shops with handcrafted goods. With all these different aspects within the Mekong Delta, each service works together to provide a tourism experience for foreigners like me. This tourism service is an essential part of rural development in the Mekong Delta, but rural development is also seen through the regions of coconut, chocolate, and honey that are made and provided to the markets at a faster rate. Climate change may affect the growth of these products which then affects supply and demand in the market. The overall system that is present in the rural development of the Mekong Delta ultimately boosts the economy. Being able to visit the Mekong Delta was definitely one of the best experiences in Vietnam.
