It seems like every other news article I read mentions how our planet’s forests, wildlife, and natural resources are being destroyed at a rate we can’t seem to repair. It often makes me lose hope in a better future for our environment and future generations. However, after learning about the sustainable nature of Costa Rica I feel there is still a fight to keep our environment healthy and thriving. It seems to me that Costa Rica is a leader in preserving their country’s sustainability, something many other parts of the world aren’t making a priority.
Although a main motivator for Costa Rica’s investment in their own backyard is ecotourism, even the slightest bit of research would reveal that Costa Rica currently uses 99.2% renewable energy versus the United States sitting at 12.6%. That massive gap shows me a lot about the commitment the country has made towards a clean and green approach to living, nearly everyone supports the movement. Their efforts towards restoring and protecting as much of their forests as possible is an example that other countries can follow suit with. I believe it’s not only inspiring that Costa Rica puts so much effort towards the environment, but necessary for every country to do so if we want to continue a high quality of life from here on out. After reading about the agricultural sector of Costa Rica’s economy, it appears that they try to assist small farmers so they don’t fall behind the big fruit and coffee businesses of today. They have programs of compensation and land ownership that allow traditional farmers have a stake in the massive business of growing coffee or bananas. A huge win in my book for the government and culture of Costa Rica.
This trip to Costa Rica will be my first out of the country and the excitement I’m feeling is like never before. I’ve been reading up on the country’s food, activities, animals, and countless rain forests that I cannot wait to see in person. I also am excited to interact with people of another social and cultural community, since I’ve never been out of the US I don’t fully understand what it’s like across the globe. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with people who have lived a much different life than my own and learn about what differences exist among myself and the people of Costa Rica. I have looked at this trip as a means of growing who I am as a person and adult. I’ve always placed an importance on soaking up the wisdom and experience of others. I am hopeful the perspectives and stories of local residents will be something I pick up along the way. My anticipation for this trip has included a ton of youtube videos, packing up everything necessary, and trying to mentally prepare for such an experience. Simply said, I’m counting the hours until we leave!
