¡Hola!

As I become more and more familiar with Costa Rica’s initiatives towards environmentalism, I gain more respect for the country and the people enforcing these plans. I myself am a large proponent of sustainability and aim to pursue a sustainability certificate along with my business degree. I think Costa Rica’s initiatives are very progressive and impressive for such a small country and they are working towards a safer and cleaner planet which will in turn benefit everyone. Their efforts are extremely important for the environment, and specifically to maintain their beautiful nature.

Costa Rica shows a strong focus on sustainability initiatives such as tourism, ecology, and the environment. Since Costa Rica is largely recognized for their ecotourism, the country has a certificate for sustainable tourism practices ranging across all different sectors. Additionally, they have a Blue Flag Ecology Program in which they work to inspire individuals, businesses, and communities to take care of the environment and implement sustainable practices. One of Costa Rica’s main goals in the upcoming years is to become a carbon neutral country. Already, Costa Rica produces nearly 93 percent of its electricity from renewable resources and 25 percent of its land is preserved wildlife so it seems as like they are headed in the right direction. In keeping with the theme of the trip, a sustainable practice of growing coffee involves growing it in the shade of barrier trees which helps nourish the soil and the leaves fall into the soil and become compost. Furthermore, this process provides a home for birds in sentinel trees and maintains the natural cycle of wildlife in the area.

Apart from their sustainability practices, I am excited to experience the rich culture and beauty that is Costa Rica. Hiking the trails, meeting locals, trying new, tasty foods, and learning first-hand about bananas and coffee. I’m interested to really see how my favorite coffee is grown and sourced along with the rest of the supply chain process. I will be able to apply this real-life experience in my future Pitt business career and my professional career as well. Studying abroad will also give me great experience for future study abroad trips, as I know there will be more to come. I’m very excited to get to know my fellow classmates and finally experience the long awaited Plus3 program.
