After a week filled with all different kinds of activities, today was supposed to be a free day where we get to choose whatever we want to do. To my surprise, we were informed a day prior that our program managers Phil and Meade had purchased tickets for our group to venture out to EPIC, the Irish Emigration Museum. At first I was reluctant because I was looking forward to sleeping a little later for the first time on the trip, but after experiencing the museum, I am glad I made it out. This museum was unlike any I had been to before. To start, it exists underneath a shopping center on the Northside of the city, which took me by surprise as I had previously visited the center and had no idea that the museum was below me. Once entering the actual museum, it was clear that it was not a conventional offering. The place was designed to be extremely interactive as you are given a passport to stamp after visiting each themed room of the museum. Some examples of the themes they had were conflict, eating and drinking, storytelling, leading change, and others. My favorite room to visit was the song and dance space. I was super impressed watching videos of classic Irish song and dance. This art showcased the heart and soul of the culture of Ireland. The exhibits offered many new pieces of information that we otherwise would have never discovered from simply traveling around the city, and for this I am thankful.
