After a long day of travel on Saturday, we finally touched down at Munich Airport around 7 a.m. Sunday. By the time we made it to Augsburg, running on zero sleep and full-blown jet lag, my top priority was finding an Augsburg cappuccino. After that was acquired, we toured the city as a group. I was impressed with the quaintness of the city, it feels more like a town. I was reminded of Quebec while touring the city, lots of the architecture and road layouts felt very similar. The thing I liked most about my first day in Augsburg was the intricate churches. The paintings, sculptures, and stained glass was so detailed.
Although some of the city was bombed in WWII, Augsburg retains most of its ‘old-timey’ feel. It feels like a fairytale town with it’s cobblestone streets, colorful rows of historic buildings, and locals chatting outside at cafes. Augsburg is a calm and inviting town and I am very glad that this is the plus 3 destination I selected. After our tour of the city and some walking around on our own time, we met for dinner at Zeughausstuben where I was introduced to authentic German food. I ordered a turkey dish that was served with potato dumplings and sauerkraut. It was like eating a New Year’s Day meal, a large portioned, tasty, hearty meal made with love.
