Day 4: Vina Capital Foundation, Nón Lá, and Water Bus Tour!

We began our fourth day with a visit to the Vina Capital Foundation. Mr. Rad Kivette, the man who presented the foundation to us, left an incredible impression on all of us. His insights into the Vina Capital Foundation were truly impactful. It’s remarkable to witness the dedication and hard-work they’ve taken to address critical issues in Vietnam.

The girls’ clubs in rural Vietnam particularly struck me. The realities of early marriage and motherhood, alongside the high infant mortality rates in those regions, were quite shocking. It really underscores the urgent need for interventions focused on educating and empowering young women and improving healthcare access.

Thinking about the methods by the foundation, the emphasis on sexual and physical education within the girls’ clubs resonates with similar initiatives in the US and other developed countries. The understanding that providing young women with knowledge about their bodies and reproductive health is crucial to their well-being and society’s progression as a whole. However, the specific cultural contexts and certain challenges in Vietnam likely result in alternative approaches. It makes the country and the people appreciate the work the foundation is doing.

Reflecting on the challenges this foundation currently faces, we can identify quite a few. For instance, the reliance on foreign funding, particularly in light of shifts in international aid policies like USAID, seems like a significant hurdle. Navigating these changes and coming up with new funding sources will likely be a key challenge for the foundation to ensure its continued impact.

Beyond the insightful visit to the Vina Capital Foundation, our day was also filled with cultural education. Our history lesson on the legend of Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ was fascinating. The legend describes the origin story of the Vietnamese people. We then painted our Nón Lá hats afterwards. It was a fun and creative way to connect with the local culture in anticipation of our Mekong Delta trip.

The evening water boat tour to Thanh Da was a highlight. Sharing delicious food and playing basketball with the locals offered a wonderful glimpse into the everyday life and warmth of the Vietnamese people. It’s these moments of genuine connection that truly make this experience so memorable and I cannot wait to see what tomorrow entails.
