Day 10 (Baseball Game, DMZ)

Today was a lot of fun! At 9:30 a.m., we headed to our first destination: the DMZ. The DMZ is the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, where there is technically peace. It’s also a place where you can look at North Korea from a distance.

Before we got there, though, we stopped for lunch. The options were army soup or pizza. Army soup is a stew that Koreans made when they were struggling and would throw all their leftovers into one pot to make a meal. The ingredients often include hot dogs, Spam, vegetables, and noodles. I chose the pizza instead because I’m not a big fan of Spam, so I played it safe.

After lunch, we began our DMZ tour. The first place we visited was the tunnels that North Koreans dug in an attempt to secretly infiltrate the South. It was really cool walking through them and crouching down in the narrow cave they created.

Next, we went to the observatory, where we were supposed to get a clear view of North Korea through large glass windows—but unfortunately, it was so foggy you couldn’t see more than two feet in front of you.

After the DMZ tour, we headed to our second location of the day: the baseball game. The teams playing were the Lions and the Heroes. It was a really cool and different experience compared to baseball games in America. You could bring in food from outside, which made it much cheaper. There was also a lot more energy in the stands. Every inning featured chants, songs, and dances—led by a hype guy on a stage and some cheerleaders who kept the crowd engaged the whole time.

We were cheering for the Heroes, but they lost 6–3. The game was really close until the end, when the Lions scored four runs in one inning.

Today was so much fun, and I’d love to go to another baseball game in Korea again!
