After a long day of travel, we have finally made it to Cyprus. Last evening, we got to walk around and explore a bit, ate dinner, but did not do much after since most of us were so tired from traveling. Today was our first real day on the island, and we explored a few different historical sights of Limassol, the town we are currently staying in, and continuing to get acclimated to the Cypriot culture and environment.
First, we went to Kourion, an old town that contains a massive theatre/arena that we got to explore. We went to the bath house first, which had a bunch of different rooms and artifacts to see, and afterwards we made our way down to the ancient mosaics and ruins, which were beautiful and had a lot of religious inscriptions and messages, and I also saw a few caves that were created by the ruins as well. Below the ruins was a massive fertile strip of land and the Mediterranean was overlooking as well, where the tour guide explained that if you looked far enough into the distance, you could see the Great Pyramids of Egypt.
Afterwards, we went to the Kolossi Castle down the road, which crusaders lived in during the holy crusades. A draw bridge brought us to the first floor there was a religious depiction of Jesus, and there were three floors overall, with the third floor serving as a roof and providing us with a beautiful view of the city of Limassol, and we also saw where the cannons and arrows were kept up there.
Finally, we took a walking tour through the “Old City” where we saw a variety of trees, cats and shopping centers, and got lunch. Overall, it was an amazing first day in Limassol and I am excited to see more of the city in the coming days.
