King Grant

Hola todos! Today we had a fantastic day! While there was a strike going on in Argentina we still had some fantastic conversations with our professor, Grant Martsolf. Unfortunately our activities got canceled for today, however we had a talk with our professor about everything we’ve learned about for the last week or so. A big topic that we discussed is the difference in the public sector of healthcare in Buenos Aires from healthcare in the United States. Some huge topics/themes that we discussed were the fragmentation, long-term sustainability, and the accessibility of public healthcare for the people.

The first topic we described was the fragmentation of the healthcare system. There are many differences and break ups in the public system because the healthcare system is like multiple different systems under one central body. With the instability of the economy, it is extremely hard to run the system when you don’t have any idea how many patients you will have, if the employees wikll show up to work, and it is especially hard to purchase medical supplies because of how weak the peso is.

After this we had the opportunity to rexplore the city a llittle bit more since our activities got cancelled. I used this time to go on na nice run and explore a street market. One thing that surprised me was how many people there are in the markets that want to exchange cash with you, in the sense of trading dollars for pesos.

After this I went to Plaza del Mayo which is where there was a protest happening against president Milei. Another thing that is cool is that there are a group of moms that march every thursday at 3:30 pm for thier dead/missing sons from when the military ruled over Argentina. They have not missed a Thursday since 1967. After the protest we went on the water and I saw some beautiful views followed by a nice steak dinner. Argentina is know for their cattrle so items like steak and leather are very high quality and not too expenive.

Today was a great day!
