May 8th – Little Lads in Deutschland & Döner Kebab

Captain’s Log: Day 1

Before I say anything about today, I need to address the first most important thing.

It’s mother’s day 💐, so today’s post is dedicated to my mom ❤️. Moms are not normal people, they are beyond anything any human could be. They are heroes, not only because they literally have powers, but also because they help you in your most critical times of need. And to my mom, I say, you are my hero, and I am so thankful for you. I love you mom ❤️, and thank you for letting me go to Germany even though it’s a bit out of your comfort level 😅🙏🏽

Happy Mother’s Day to all moms! I hope you find today peaceful (maybe not if your kids are hyper 😂) and full of love ❤️

Anyway, on with the show!

After a not so comfortable plane ride from JFK into Munich, I managed to get 3 hours of sleep 😭

There just isn’t a comfortable position to sleep in on a plane unless you have leg room, or your seat can recline
(Mine was broken for some reason 😠)

Me and my crew exited the plane by the stairs! No jet bridge, which, as for being the crazy man I am about planes, was so thrilling! Massive jet engines, colossal body, giant wing span, the list goes on!

Stepping into Germany without passing through German Customs 😉
Also, BIG PLANE!

We passed through customs and collected our luggage and finally boarded a bus to head straight to Augsburg and to our hotel.

Along the way, we passed several massive yellow fields containing Rapeseed, a common plant in Germany used to make canola oil.

Miles and miles of these mysterious, yet bright colored fields

When we arrived, we checked into rooms, to discover that they were very small and compact!

Sample of a hotel room, the beds in our room were basically touching!
These rooms were the most compact I’ve seen to let two people live inside

But either way, we were on a very tight schedule (the plane was delayed 6 hours, so we had to catch up), but we were hungry and we needed to grab lunch and fast. Once we reached a mini plaza, everyone decided what they wanted to eat. Most students wanted to grab a quick lunch, so they went to McDonalds, but I personally have never been a fan, and I was NOT gonna let my first food in Germany be McDonalds!

I was initially disappointed thinking I wasn’t going to eat anything, but then one of our crew named Nate noticed a place called Kebaphaus Ali Baba, so me and a few of my other daring crew, which included Jason, Ben, Jerry, and of course Nate went to try Döner Kebap, which are Turkish Gyros! (Germany has a heavy Turkish influence due to the immigration majority, and as someone who has eaten homemade shawarma and gyro, I had to say, the wrap I had today was absolutely fantastic!)

Heaven in a wrap! This Döner Kebap only costed 6.50 Euros!
And it did an excellent job of feeding and tasting delicious!

It was easy to say, the Döner Kebap beat McDonalds by a landslide today! (Some of the other crew felt disappointed they didn’t know about the chance to eat such food, but no matter! There’s many days to come to try everything!)

BEAT McDonalds! Fantastic food, fantastic price, fantastic size! ALL FANTASTIC!

Soon after, we were given a very short tour of the city of Augsburg, and we learned greatly of the architecture and norms of the local German-Folk. For one thing, today was Sunday, and on Sunday’s, everyone is usually at home relaxing (a typical tradition in Germany) so, because it was Sunday, the streets were absolutely silent.
Barely any cars driving, good wind, and nice temperatures. Today was a perfect day to get to tour a bit. be

Many canals like this one flow through Augsburg because it is between two rivers
The Lech, and the Wertach. I anticipate there will be a lot of beautiful photos taken
during my journey, so let’s hope for sunny skies and good times to come!

And to finish the day, we learned some fascinating history about the Richest Man Jacob Fuggerei (If you’re interested read on about his life and see what made him so rich and famous!), then we got dinner at a small restaurant meeting some of the students from the University of Augsburg, and finally we returned to the hotel.

I wish I got a better chance to talk to the Augsburg Students (Most seats in the restaurant had been filled in), but there will be plenty more of that tomorrow!

It’s been a LONG day, and not necessarily the most eventful or exciting for German stuff, but now that everything is settled in, I will finally be able to catch up on my sleep schedule (very hard to work with JetLag, [literally fell asleep twice during dinner lol]) and report more exciting things to you all! So Gute Nacht and I’ll see you tomorrow!
