An Ocean View

Today we visited three old castles around Limassol. It was very interesting to the changing architecture as each castle was conquered you could see the Gothic period, Roman, and British periods. One of the Gothic architectures that were very common was large, pointed arches meanwhile in Roman times you saw more rounded archways. In addition, the archway’s castles could also be identified by the symbols that were embedded above the archways. These would either represent families or the rules of the time. Outside of the architecture of the castles, their locations were also very important. Each of these castles was located near water to keep a watch for incoming ships. Another aspect of architecture is all of the castles had moats and draw bridges to help protect the castles.

After visiting some of the castles we went to see an old archeological site of an old town located at the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean. The name of this town was Kourion. They had bath house that used fires and floor heating methods to make the modern-day spa. The three sections of the bathhouse were room temp water, medium heat, and hot. The water was heated by fires beneath the floors of the spa. In addition to the three pools, they had small foot baths before getting into the cold tubs. Just outside of the bathhouse was a large amphitheater that during its time could hold 3 thousand people. The Kourion amphitheater was originally created by the Greeks however when the Romans took over, they took over the amphitheater they converted it into more of a colosseum. They put large bars and fences around the base for the events they would host such as the animal killings and fights. However, the most beautiful aspect of this amphitheater is the seats would look out onto the ocean from atop the cliff.
