Today we started off with a e-commerce speaker in a classroom at Donghua University. He talked about BAT(Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent) and different streams of business such as B2B (business to business), B2C (business to consumer), C2C (consumer to consumer) and others. He also showed us a video of the CFO of Alibaba giving a speech about its future projections and past accomplishments. The lecture shocked me- I didn’t realize how huge of a market Chinese e-commerce was. After the lecture was a 5 minute Q&A session. Then the speaker left and about a dozen university students walked in with their advisor. All of them were girls except for one! I was extremely confused but my question would be answered in 30 minutes. Each student was a tour guide and buddy to two Pitt students. I was with a sophomore student whose English name was Yoghurt who was majoring in interior design and was from Hong Kong- how cool is that! We were given five minutes to get to know each other and then we headed to lunch in their school cafeteria. I thought their school cafeteria food was amazing compared to Market but Yoghurt said that Hong Kong food was better, which was not surprising! Yoghurt and I talked about college life in China, school, and life in Shanghai. We then went on a campus tour. The campus was rather small but the buildings were pretty modern. Donghua University’s biggest majors are fashion and design- which explained why there were so many more female students than male. Yoghurt told me that the ratio of male students to female students was 7:3 and that there was an ongoing joke among the students that there were more stray cats on campus than male students. There was a graffiti wall done by the art students that was delightfully artsy. In the middle of the tour we did a brief stop at the restroom. At this point in my China trip I was used to squatty potties but this restroom had a trough going through all the stalls! On our last leg of the tour Yoghurt and I found out that we could hold a conversation in Korean! After our tour was over we headed back to the classroom and attempted to make a Chinese knot but failed miserably. After the university visit we headed back to the hotel where Hayley and I accidentally took a 4 hour nap and woke up to get dinner at 8 oops!
