My international experience to date is: I have left the United States only once before. It was for a summer vacation in Norway with my family. We have family friends that moved to Norway, so we were visiting them. We spent two weeks hiking and swimming while traveling north in an RV visiting the major cities that we passed.
I want to go to China because: I want to go to china because it has been at the top of my personal list of countries that I want to visit since I was very young. I have always been fascinated by the culture and history of china. I think it would be a very good experience for me to grow socially, and not to mention the academic benefits that I will receive upon completion of plus3.
I think the main professional work differences I will experience will be: I think the main differences between the professional work in china versus in the United States will be that people in the United states are more focused on individualism. I think that there is more of a collective unit in Chinese work places as opposed to here. Also, communication is different, I am not sure how the dynamic effects work, but I am sure that it changes something.
I think the main cultural differences I will experience will be: I think the main cultural differences will be that there is less concern for strangers in China. I’ve been told that personal space isn’t a thing in China in things like elevators. Also, people in the United States have more freedom of speech due to the different governing styles.
I think the main political differences I will experience will be: I think the main political differences between the United States and China are that censorship is much more prevalent in China. Also, the Chinese president has removed the term limit which has made him into a pseudo dictator, which is very different to full blown democracy.
I think the students I meet in my country will be: I think that work ethic in China is emphasized much more than it is in the United States. So, the students will be more focused in theory than they are here. I think that comparing work ethics and cultures with the students will shed a lot of light on the core differences between us and them.
I think the major differences in living conditions will be: I think the major differences in living conditions will be that we are in a hotel for the entire trip, and there are other rules put in place by plus3 so there will be more order. Also, there is a lot of pollution specifically in Beijing, so it will be interesting to experience that.
I think the most enjoyable experience I will have during this trip will be: I think the most enjoyable experience I will have is visiting the Great Wall of China. Like I mentioned before, I have always wanted to come to china, and more specifically I have always wanted to visit the great wall. The history of it and the fact that it is just a giant wall is very interesting to me.
