A lot has changed in Ireland over the last few years specifically within Dublin. We have seen productivity skyrocket with large multinational companies shifting into the city as well as stimulus from the government for Irish companies. There are also many different political topics that have come to the forefront including Brexit an the referendum of Ireland’s 8th amendment regarding abortion. Over the next few years there is tremendous potential for change.
If in the future, I am lucky enough to return to Dublin in 3 years with my fellow plus3 transfer students, I expect there won’t appear to be much difference on the surface. However, once we dig deeper, I believe we will see many changes. For example, I believe the 8th amendment will be repealed in Ireland according to the polls. Specific to Dublin, I expect more multinational companies to continue to shift into the city and employee many talented people. I also expect Dublin to receive more international attention as, in the wake of Brexit, it becomes clear that Dublin has the potential to become the corporate capital of Europe. I also think many Irish startups will make the transition into stable tech and agriculture businesses and also move their headquarters to Dublin. We will see the city take on an almost “silicon valley” type of feel.
Although Dublin has the potential for many positive changes, I also see some problems as well. If Brexit becomes a hard Brexit (with lots of tariffs and regulations between Ireland and Britain) then many Irish companies in the agricultural niche could be put at risk. I also see the homeless problem increasing in severity because, as Dublin becomes more of a hub, property pricing will continue to go up. We will see more low income people be forced out of their homes. Potentially, we may see the Irish government step in to provide low income housing or other solutions. There is tremendous potential for Dublin in the future but there are problems that must be addressed.
