Today is the day most of us head back to reality. After a long day (which felt like 3 days) of traveling from Dublin to Atlanta to Pittsburgh, I am certain of one thing, the second after I hit publish I will fall asleep for a very long time. While it is nice to be home, it is rather bittersweet to say goodbye to Dublin where I made so many friends and great memories. Our final task in Dublin was to create a presentation about the specific company was assigned.
When it comes to presentations I do think I have some skills. First, I think I do a good job of communicating and engaging with my audience as opposed to just standing there robotically and reading off of slides or notes. I usually try to bring some excitement and often humor into presentations, I think this is important in order to keep my audience engaged in the presentation.
While I think I have strengths I also think I have weaknesses. I think one weakness I have is that if I stumble on my wording or what I am trying to say I lose some confidence and I can get off topic and sometimes ramble nonsense. However, I think maybe my biggest weakness when presenting is finishing and driving home the topic I am talking about. I feel like frequently I will end sentences with “so yeah” or some kind of wording like that which I think really takes away from everything I would have said before that. I think this is the one point I want to improve on as well. I think it all comes down to preparation and confidence to really drive home a point so I will have to work on those two attributes.
I think this Plus3 trip has given us some great insight into the different types of presentations. From Bord Bia to Google, to Enterprise Ireland they were all different and I think it is important to take the good parts of each of these into account when creating presentations in the future.
