South Korea: The Perspective of a Steel City Native

안녕하세요! Or in English, hello! I’m Emily Strzesieski and I am delighted that you have made it to my blog detailing my PittBusiness Plus3 Korea experience. I am a proud steel city native, born and raised just outside of Pittsburgh. I take great pride in being a member of my city’s community as there truly isn’t another place I would rather call home. I chose to study at the University of Pittsburgh because I love the vibrant atmosphere the Oakland neighborhood offers including the people and places, but I especially appreciate the world-renowned education the College of Business Administration provides. I am studying accounting and business information systems on the pre-law track because I enjoy applying my strategic thinking abilities and analytical skills to solving intricate problems. My campus involvement includes serving as President of the Resident Student Association Quad Hall Council, wherein I have been privileged to advocate for over 500 students in 3 residence halls regarding matters of concern in the Division of Student Affairs. I will be continuing my engagement with the Department of Residence Life in the 2019-20 academic year by serving as a Resident Assistant with the objective of providing the best residential experience in the world for students living on-campus. Also, I am an active member of the student organization, Women in Business, where I have participated in professional and service-based initiatives to promote female leadership in business and entrepreneurship. Other projects I have been active in at Pitt include volunteering with PittServes, and completing the Outside of the Classroom Curriculum. While balancing all of my engagements, I remain passionate about creating time to pursue my personal interests like running, reading, and trying new restaurants all over the Burgh!

I am honored to be a member of the first class of students to travel to South Korea as a Plus3 Program location, and study the smart systems within digital devices that are currently fueling the Korean economy. Smart systems are mechanisms that sense and process the dynamics of an environment to make predictive decisions based off of available data. This technological advancement fascinates me because business is rapidly globalizing, specifically in the accounting industry as this field takes on a greater role in management consulting. As environments become increasingly fast-paced with ever changing regulations and restrictions, I anticipate that the development of smart systems will aid in managing these complexities. Thus, am excited to further my understanding of the digital devices driving the future and changing our world. Plus3 Korea will also be an opportunity to challenge myself as a student, utilizing the country as my classroom. From company site visits like the Korea National Oil Corporation to important global citizen experiences like visiting the DMZ, I expect my education to be enriched in a unique manner beyond what a textbook could provide. However, I do hope that the Bibimbap dish is as tasty as it has been described in the articles I have read about Korean cuisine! I am fortunate to be sharing this learning experience with other students from the College of Business Administration and the Swanson School of Engineering, along with two distinguished faculty members as we go from the classroom, to the city, to the world! 안녕! Or in English, goodbye for now!
