Hi everyone! My name is Daria Hatter and I am currently finishing up my freshman year here at the University of Pittsburgh. I am in the College of Business Administration double majoring in Finance and Marketing, and minoring in Africana Studies. I lived in Texas my whole life up until college, being born in Austin and moving to Houston when I was very little. I’ve always been extremely active and I grew up playing many different sports, eventually focusing on swimming. I swam competitively for USA swimming club teams and my high school team and then committed to swim as a part of the D1 women’s program here at Pitt. In high school I was also involved in 2 honor societies: National Honor Society (NHS) and National English Honor Society (NEHS). I was the Vice President of NEHS and before that I was the activities coordinator and handled our participation in fairs and organizing community outreach. I also grew up heavily involved in my church.
Apart from the swim team, since arriving at Pitt I have joined the Roberto Clemente Minority Business Association (RCMBA), Black Action Society (BAS), and Women of Wisdom (WOW). Being a part of RCMBA has been a great experience as it has helped me meet other minority business students with high aspirations, further developed my professional skills, and given me additional exposure to company recruiters. I joined the Freshman Leadership Program of RCMBA and joined the Membership Committee. Next year I plan on joining the Real Estate Financial Academy.
Professionally I am not certain what path I would like to follow, but I have an interest in Real Estate Finance and City Development, and I have really enjoyed my Intro to Marketing class. I would like to narrow down my potential career interests as I take more classes in the business school and have internships. It is also important to me to involve my Africana Studies minor in my life in some way.
I chose Argentina for a number of reasons. I love the Afro-Latin culture and have never been to South America. I think it will be extremely fun to experience the culture and foods first hand, and also test put my Spanish to use. I am excited to be able to learn more about Argentina’s healthcare system and how it is different from here in the United States. In preparation for our trip we’ve done research on different topics and developed questions I would like to know the answers to once we visit the hospitals in country. As a foodie, trying foods that Argentina is famous for such as empanadas is really exciting. I also have a lot of interest in the supply chain management may mester program in Uruguay, and I think going to Argentina will give me a good sense in determining if I would want to return to the area for a longer period of time. Making new friends is always fun and I’m looking forward to getting to know the people on the Plus3 trip with me and create memories that will last a lifetime. I hope that my trip to Argentina allows me to be more out of my comfort zone by studying in an unfamiliar environment.
